Farewell, PC Magazine

Posted on January 8, 2009 by Alan

Been a long time since I posted, and I will try to get back to it.  I got the last PC Magazine in the mail last week.  They advised that it was their last issue in print, and that I would automatically be switched to the digital format unless I asked for a refund.  I asked for a refund.

I have been a subscriber to the magazine since the early days, when I was computer hobbiest.  Recently the content has gone down  hill, with expanded coverage of such silly things as automobile electronics.  They also began charging everyone for the utilities they wrote — even if you were a subscriber.

Why cancel?  First, it offends me that they can go from publication costs to next to zero publication costs without giving me more.  But more importantly, I like reading magazines before bed and while in the “reading room”.  I will not squeeze one of these PDF files onto my BB and neither will I shell out hundreds for a  ebook reader.

I’ll try to keep track of Dvorak’s columns via email, but otherwise I am done.

All the scripts are saved as .txt files. Newer files have a “View Script” button which will let you save or open a script in notepad. For earlier posts, the easiest way to download with IE is to right click on the link and use “Save Target As”. Rename file from Name_ext.txt to Name.ext.
